Climate Scheme Forests

Our climate scheme forests will be located in varying locations around Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The project was launched on the 28th of November 2007 close to Neustrelitz, where the first 100 sessile oak were planted on an area of approximately 2,300 m². These trees, funded by the scheme’s main sponsors – among others, the conference pool MeetMV, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Tourist Board and rail travel service ‘Bahnreisespezialisten Ameropa’ – were only the prelude to the further planting of trees in this region. Additional trees will soon follow as part of the scheduled forestation scheme.

Image Aside from the climate scheme forest close to Neustrelitz, more forests under the scheme can be found on Usedom, Rügen, and close to Mirow in the Mecklenburg waterfront. At these locations, the planting of the trees was made into a communal, hands-on experience, in which every forest shareholder was offered the opportunity to plant their own tree, thereby playing their own small part in protecting the climate.

Climate Scheme Forest on Usedom

The area used for the climate scheme forest on the island Usedom can be found close to Koserow. This forestation area can be reached by taking the main road 111 from Damerow in the direction of Koserow, turning right at the end of the forest complex over the unsecured railroad crossing, and then going roughly 100 m in the direction of Achterwasser. It can be found in forest section 3381, directly upstream in the forest, and this area is approximately 2 hectares large and offers the space for 2000 common oak trees. The first trees were planted here on Usedom on the 25th of April and the 25th of October 2008, with further appointments scheduled for 2009.

Climate Scheme Forest on Rügen

The forestation area on the island Rügen can be found close to Glowe. This area can be reached by taking the B-Road L30 from Bergen in the direction of Breege, turning left when exiting Glowe. The roughly 2.5 hectare large area can be found in roughly 800 m far from the right side between two existing forest divides. The first 300 trees were planted here on the 11th of October 2008, and a further 700 were planted in November.

Climate Scheme Forest Mirow (the Mecklenburg Lake District)

The forestation area used for the climate scheme forest at Mirow can be found roughly one kilometre south-west of Zirtow in the district of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and is approximately 2.8 hectares large. In this area, 2,800 common alders are planned to be cultivated, of which already 1,600 have already been planted. This area can be reached by taking the main road B198 between Mirow and Wesenberg. It is possible to park at the location directly at the side of the main road.

Climate Scheme Forest Scheunhagen (close to Fischland-Darß-Zingst)

The new 1.11 hectare-large forestation area in the Fischland-Darß-Zingst area can be found in the immediate vicinity of the official forestry buildings of Schuenhagen, west of the street from Velgast L212 – Richtenberg. This area will be forested principally with wild cherry trees in a mix with other exquisite trees. In addition, the instalment of a tiered forest outskirt has been envisaged to be comprised of tree species such as blackthorn trees, cranberry bushes, field maple trees, and crabapple trees relating to ecological reasons. The launch of the scheme took place in Schuenhagen on the 11th of October 2008, whereby approximately 500 trees were planted.

Our Forest Shareholders

Axel Prahl, Actor

I travel to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern because the good things are all within a stone's throw away, and I don't want to be on a plane for hours polluting the air. The forest shares idea suits the State like the local beach and nature. That's why I support it.

Till Backhaus, Agricultural, Environmental, and Consumer Protection Minister for MV

Whoever goes on holiday to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern should both counteract climate change and be encouraged to sustain and protect the environment. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is good for you: enjoy your holiday and feel good – be part of it!

Sylvia Bretschneider, President of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Tourist Board

Protecting the environment begins with every person considering how they act, and then how these actions have consequences. Taking part in the forest shares scheme produces three main positive outcomes: a small personal contribution towards a healthier climate, environmental education for both guests and locals, and ever-expanding forests in which we can all recuperate in the future.
